Overview

Prayagraj is renowned for its vibrant and diverse festivals, each adding a burst of color and energy to the lives of its residents. While many of these festivals are religious in nature, the district administration also organizes a range of cultural and food festivals throughout the year.

The festival calendar kicks off with the Magh Mela, a month-long event held in January-February that draws millions of pilgrims to Prayagraj for a sacred dip. During this period, a sprawling tented city springs up on the mela grounds. Another highlight is the annual Ganga Water Rally, and the Water Sports Festival in February, organized by the tourism department, features thrilling activities like kayaking and canoeing.

March brings Holi, the festival of colors, celebrating the arrival of spring. Following Janmashtami, Prayagraj observes Dadhikando, where vibrant processions with live portrayals of Lord Krishna, Subadra, and Balabadra take place on weekends for three weeks. Dushehra, a ten-day festival known for its elaborate chowkis, is marked by processions featuring decorated jhankis from prominent areas like Pattarchatti, Pajawa, and Katra. The festival of lights, Deepavali, celebrated in October-November, honors Lord Rama’s return and the triumph of good over evil. During this time, the city sparkles with diyas, and the Sangam area transforms into a magical spectacle with thousands of floating diyas on the rivers.
